Not your typical day at the BK flea.
We are the vendors, designers, artisans, cooks, collectors, entrepreneurs and much more that make up the Brooklyn Flea. What we endure to make it happen sometimes is the most amazing part. The weather like this last Saturday adds some visual and physical participation for the customers and their families. Most vendors get there around 8 a.m., while some vendors, get there at 6 a.m. and leave their home towns around 2 a.m. Some of us fall asleep designing the layouts for Saturday's flea. I got there around 8:45. I had just enough time to unpack the car and roll over all of my stuff on my skateboard and get the EZup at least partially up to throw everything under until I found parking. I got wet getting back to my booth and began to set up in the on/off down pour we had all morning. I had to keep my tables in the center of the tent to dodge the rain coming in on all sides. Watching the neighboring vendors struggling in the rain to tie down the tents and secure everything. I started out putting all of our product on wet tables with wet tablecloths, but fortunately everything dried off by noon when the sun came out and the wind started to gust. It was a beautiful day with lots of people, and of course long lines for popsicles and other refreshing vendors. But the wind picked up quick as I was trying to talk to my customers and take cash while holding down the tent with one hand, even though I had cinder blocks tied to each leg. It was nice to have a few nice dudes walking by to lend a hand real quick so we wouldn't blow away. All of this is pretty typical for a day at the Flea. But this weekend was different, it was a great adventure for the Flea community working together to hold it together. You could see the tunnels of wind shooting across the school lot and filling tents like balloons while groups of people were holding them down with a smile and all of their might. Vendors helping vendors, and customers lending hands to hold tents and grabbing things flying by to try to return them to their owners. The ones that couldn't or didn't participate in the action were sitting around awe. By around 3 p.m. almost every vendor peeled off the shell on their tents and you just saw all the white skeletons of the pop-up tents. Shortly after, all the tents were getting taken down right around the customers. Trash was flying though the air, flyer's, and napkins were everywhere. By the end, I was bear hugging my table to keep the product on it, and a friend of mine in the catcher's box was trying to chase after all the bracelets and display that had blown away. And even so, it was still a very profitable day. Without the customers helping me hold things together it would have been a disaster. Tents were turning inside out, flying, and breaking, in singles and in groups. This weekend, mother nature was in control, and like most people, I closed up earlier than 5 p.m. The ones that stayed had things that could stay on tables and racks with out blowing away. During tear-down, everybody had smiles and still had fun even though it was nearly impossible to be able to vend. Despite all of the craziness that we put up with, this is what makes the market remarkable and irreplaceable. Who could imagine that such a great community of customers and vendors existed in one place but today due to the weather it showed.

To take this in more of a green direction, we also created a limited edition hemp handbag with a convertible strap and detailed wooden handles.
